'Twas the night before Christmas, and for people depressed, Expectations of joy, may instead leave you stressed... The anxious may find, that rather than "cheer", Their social commitments cause feelings of fear. Elation! Delight! That's the typical norm, All those Christmasy things leave you fuzzy and warm! Most people get this, and wouldn't assume, The emotion you're feeling, is actually "gloom". The signals and hormones that course through your brain, Make irrational sadness quite hard to explain. It means people you meet (who are happy) instead, May offer you tips about thoughts in your head: "Just be cheerful", they say, "and whatever you do, Don't admit that there's anything bothering you. There are friends and nice food, and gifts stacked in a pile, So the least you could try, is to muster a smile!" It's clichéd and puerile and (obviously), Doesn't help with your sadness or anxiety. The phrase "cheer up" is particularly fun: Do you reckon it's ever helped out anyone!? But! PLEASE bear in mind, those who give this advice Aren't acting with malice; they're just being nice. It's easy to snap and to grump and to glare, And forget that your friends and your family care. It's not always simple (let's not trivialise), To both feel how you feel, and still socialise. Sometimes you might need a moment alone, To have a lie down, or just play on your phone. You shouldn't feel pressured, you can be by yourself, Don't forget your priority's YOUR mental health, Your friends are around when you feel you can share, I'm sure you will find lots of sympathy there. At the end of it all, I guess what I'm trying to say,
Is try not to worry: it's only one day. Whether happy or sad, don't deny what you feel! And it's fine to retreat once you've finished the meal :) You can hide, you can chat, you can just sit and read, Look after yourself, do whatever you need, One more bit of advice! Just before you all go, Merry Christmas to you, and don't eat yellow snow.....
