Good StuffDespite what they sound like, Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays aren't actually a 70s disco quartet, but in fact the names of a small town and a string of islands respectively. We actually hadn't intended to go out to the Whitsundays at all, but having met a few fellow travellers who couldn't help but gush endlessly about how awesome they were, we eventually gave in. Hoo boy, we weren't disappointed. Look I'm not big into boats or sailing or anything like that, but as a committed land-lubber there was something incredible about cruising around these utterly pristine islands in a sailing boat, eating BBQ food and going snorkeling amongst the southern tips of the Great Barrier Reef with a trip to the famous white sands of Whitehaven beach. I didn't want to leave, I felt genuinely happy, and the reef was more spectacular than I thought possible. Bad StuffBeing the ever explorative but also somewhat lazy trailblazer that I am, we (my other half and I) decided to go for a rainforest walk a short jaunt from Airlie, and bussed to the start of the easiest route on the list, because it's too hot for climbing mountains, alright? Easy as the terrain was, apparently all the other tourists are either a) way more adventurous than us or b) even more lazy than we are, because the route was so untouched spider webs spanned the entire width of the path for the entire trip, and we were hounded unceasingly by nightmarishly large horse flies that (as soon as you stopped moving for three fifths of a picosecond) dog piled every inch of your available skin and beyond. One bit me through my sock. It was as big as a medium sized sofa-bed. Mood StuffMostly positive, despite nature's best efforts. There were a few points on the boat ride where I felt a bit down, since my options of location were the overly hot and somewhat uncomfy deck, the seating area inside where people would pass by asking me why I wasn't outdoors, and our "room" or "cupboard" which was also right next to the engine and smelled of oil. Thankfully there was enough ventilation that we didn't asphyxiate overnight; sleeping wasn't awful but waking up suddenly could result in an unwelcome concussion.
This didn't last that long, and otherwise I mostly felt like I was actually on a holiday and actually doing things I'd always wanted to do, even if I hadn't realised when I booked it. I'm still not learning how to sail though.
